Crypta Balbi Museum
#Crypta, #Balbi, #Rome
In Rome, there are many attractions and sights to see. I have been here before and seen all the main sites, but one of my favourite things to do in any city is to go explore some of the little secret spots that most tourists miss out on. So on my last trip to Rome, I made sure to visit Crypta Balbi, an underground museum situated in an ancient Roman temple right off Via delle Botteghe Oscure in Rome, that most people would simply walk past without even knowing it’s there.
The Crypta Balbi is one of Rome’s hidden treasures, dating back to Emperor Augustus. In fact, it was never meant to be discovered as an average Roman citizen was not allowed into its hallowed halls. It was built by Julius Caesar in 45 B.C., and named after one of his generals called Gaius Octavius (who would later become Augustus Caesar) who used it for meetings and ceremonies – but never for public access.
