Mecca is undoubtedly one of the most sacred places in the world, and Muslims from all over the globe travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. A pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah al-Mukarramah), known as the Hajj, is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory for all Muslims who have the physical and financial ability to perform it.

However, Mecca can be quite an overwhelming experience for first-time visitors, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the customs of the country and get some tips on what to expect before you arrive there.

Over three million Muslims visit the holy city each year during the month of Dhu’l-Hijjah. Visits outside this month are known as minor pilgrimages or Umrah, and are not compulsory, but strongly encouraged.
